Laptop and desktop computers are a great way to read comics. One of my favorite comic book readers for the Mac is Comical. Comical is free and it can read CBR and CBZ files and is available for OS X, Windows, and Linux. But there’s a catch.

Comical runs on older Macs running OS X 10.3 Panther (see screenshot above, from the developer’s website) and OS X 10.2 Jaguar.

I’ve used it on OS X 10.4 Tiger and OS X 10.5 Leopard. It should also run on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately for Comical fans using newer Macs, the app does not run on OS X 10.7 Lion 10.7 or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. It’s a pity because Comical is a mighty good comic book reader.

For Mac users on newer machines, I recommend Ehon and and Simple Comic. You can also install Jomic though I haven’t tried it myself. If you use or have used Jomic, do let me know what you think of it.

Comical is a free, open source comic book viewer that lets you read your favorite comics comfortably from your very own computer. It includes the option of choosing if you want to see one or two pages at a time. The speed with which the comic book pages automatically re-size themselves to adapt to the size of the window you open them in is amazing. It can read comics in CBR (RAR) and CBZ (ZIP) formats that contain images in JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF formats. It can also directly read the directories that contain images in any of these formats. One of the features that is worth taking note of is how it preloads and saves each comic book page in the cache, which is perfect if there are high quality images and you don’t want to waste time waiting for the page to download. Comical also includes a full screen mode, a page browser, several image filters, and zoom and rotate tools.
